A New Ketogenic Diet Can Help You Overcome Ketogenic Diet Concerns

Unlike traditional ketogenic diets, new method encourages ketosis and weight loss without risks of harmful side effects

What is ketogenic diet?

The ketogenic diet is a very low carb, high fat diet that shares many similarities with the Atkins and low carb diets.

It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis.

When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain.

Ketogenic diets can cause significant reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. This, along with the increased ketones, has some health benefits .

Here are several versions of the ketogenic diet, including:

Standard ketogenic diet (SKD): This is a very low carb, moderate protein and high fat diet. It typically contains 70% fat, 20% protein, and only 10% carbs (9).

Cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD): This diet involves periods of higher carb refeeds, such as 5 ketogenic days followed by 2 high carb days.

Targeted ketogenic diet (TKD): This diet allows you to add carbs around workouts.

High protein ketogenic diet: This is similar to a standard ketogenic diet, but includes more protein. The ratio is often 60% fat, 35% protein, and 5% carbs.

These ketogenic diets all have one thing in common, fat occupies most of the dietary intake structure.

A New Ketogenic Diet

It is generally believed that a large amount of dietary fat will burden the body and cause some diseases and so on. However, recent studies from Dr Lim Su Lin, Chief Dietitian, Department of Dietetics, National University Hospital (NUH) have shown that the correct ketogenic diet can better achieve weight loss, and at the same time it will not cause harm to the body, but can effectively control diabetes and reduce fatty liver.

The new healthy ketogenic diet emphasizes healthy fats, such as those found in nuts, seeds, avocados, fatty fish, and unsaturated oils, that don’t raise bad cholesterol levels and reduce risk of heart disease.

In addition to healthy fats, a healthy ketogenic diet includes adequate amounts of lean protein,

High in fiber from non-starchy vegetables and low-carb fruits. This combination helps the body enters ketosis, a state in which it burns fat instead of carbohydrates for energy.

A healthy, fiber-rich ketogenic diet helps keep patients feeling full while aiding digestion and promoting gut health.

An ongoing randomized controlled trial started by Dr. Lin in mid-2021 is showing promising results. In a trial involving 80 participants from the National University Health System (NUHS), one group was assigned to a healthy keto diet, while the other group was assigned to a standard low-fat, calorie-restricted diet.

During the six months following their respective diets, preliminary results showed that the healthy ketogenic group lost an average of 7.4 kg, while the standard diet group lost only 4.2 kg.

Patients who strictly follow the program may lose up to 25kg in four months. With such significant weight loss, many participants were able to control diabetes, lower blood pressure, and reverse non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and other lifestyle diseases caused by excess weight.

In addition, the healthy ketogenic group had greater reductions in fasting blood glucose levels and triglycerides, while also showing significant improvements in insulin sensitivity.

Use the ketogenic diet correctly and monitor your physical condition at all times

Even with the correct, healthy ketogenic diet, the body can still enter a state of ketosis. For those people in ketogenic diet, blood ketone levels are an important body indicator for their own health monitoring. Therefore, a way to test blood ketones at home anytime is necessary.

The ACCUGENCE ® Multi-Monitoring System can provide four detection methods of blood ketone, blood glucose, uric acid and hemoglobin, meet the test needs of people in ketogenic diet and diabetic patients. The test method is convenient and fast, and can provide accurate test results, helping you to understand your physical condition in time and obtain better effects of losing weight and treatment.
